The "Over 50 Face"
Some people never take anything at face value.
(Forgive the lousy pun.)
"How dare you say we are each entirely responsible for our own
face after the age of 50 and not explain?" the young woman asked
after reading one of our first hesitant journeys together into
the alternative world of the ageing.
"We can only work with what we're given," she continued, totally
unconvinced, "can't we? I eat healthy. I exercise. Moisturise
the best parts with costly French mineral water, avoid conflicts
and get plenty of sleep," she added, before entering what
sounded suspiciously like a plea, "what else is there?"
Utterly mesmerised by her flawless 25-year-old visage, her
impeccable curves and the shortness of her light see-through
cotton dress the right side of my brain came this close to
saying she might very well be one of the very rare exceptions to
the rule.
"But it's not just about the face we see in the mirror" my
leftside blurted, ignoring long-dormant and potentially
embarrassing carnal impulses. "Although free radical scavengers
like alcohol abuse, heavy smoking, carpal tunnel syndrome and
obesity can wreak terrible surface havoc," I said trying hard
not to sound too physiognomic.
"No, after 50 the inner-face kicks-in to reflect who we really
are. Or were," both brain sides concluded, in rare unison.
This grabbed her interest. Her eyes weren't glazing over like
they did when I tried to explain life on the planet before the
Internet bubble burst.
"The inner face?" she shot back.
I explained how we each have a simple choice. "To show the world
a sad, frustrated, angry, bitter, arrogant, overbearing, hating,
bored, envious, insecure, depressed, despondent, gloomy,
dejected, stressed or melancholic face.
"Pick any two, or three," I added, but she'd understood.
"Or a shining face that's embracing, exciting, enthusing,
electrifying, enrapturing? And those are just the 'E's' I can
spontaneously think of."
Apprehensive now, her fitness-center-honed body taut with
concern she beseeched, "But life's daily pressures are sometimes
simply too much to bear. We can't always be happy, can we?"
I'd had enough talk. "We can try," I countered
opportunistically, "shall we?"
Later, after cracking-open a bottle of cheap Burgundy and
stir-frying some spicy beef and vegetables we watched "When
Harry met Sally" again and you might find this very hard to
believe but despite our 38-year age difference I think I can
safely speak for both of us and say a splendid time was had by
one and all.
