Feel like creating something really relevant today?

Get a pen and paper and draw two empty squares side by side.

Inside the left one sketch a single sperm. In the other, a gravestone.

Under the sperm square write in large capitals, "BEFORE", under the gravestone, "AFTER".

Then think about what your little cartoon says.

If there's a more succinct way of representing the fleeting significance of a single human life than this -- from the New Yorker magazine -- I've yet to see it.

And the space between embryo and headstone? Ha, that's the question.

Only sure is this. The world turns with- or without our active participation. No matter how much we'd like slow it down or sometimes, let's be honest, stop it altogether.

It used to amuse me dating pretty young women who'd never heard of John, Paul, George and Ringo. Now they're probably all married and explaining to their primary school children what life was like before the Internet bubble burst.

Speaking of which I no longer have to rely on friends or pay for time in Internet cafs. I'm now totally upright and upstanding, on-line and fully-connected.

Sharing viewpoints with an increasing number of new friends all over the world I can contact instantly by day or night.

Not all modern innovations are absolutely necessary. We do not desperately need satellite TV and humankind would be far better off without gas-guzzling fully-loaded 4WD off-road SUV's.

But now I've experienced the power and scope of the Internet I wonder how I ever managed without it.

Don't be fooled by those who say it's overrated. They are ostriches with their heads stuck in the sand. Or worse, somewhere else.

They're like people who say they don't like Paris. There's a city called Paris. But there's also a Paris state of mind!

It takes only a slight effort to plunge into life there and embrace it but once you do it's most rewarding.

So is the Internet. Don't be put off thinking the "Web" is only for youngsters who understand computers.

Surfing is easier than programming any video recorder. And to tell you something most frankly, I wish we'd had the web between hoola-hooping and yo-yo-ing when I was young .

Time will tell but I think today's youngsters are definitely better off, able to discover life in vast whole new worlds we couldn't even imagine.

A life they may never want to slow down.

I know I don't.
