Joys Of Senior Sex
The name Alex Comfort won't mean anything to
younger readers but will eject a loud gasp of recognition among
those of us who survived -- without noticeable lingering
side-effects -- the sexual revolution of the early 1970's.
The aptly-named Comfort died two years ago at the grand age of
84, but before discussing his claim to fame let's revisit that
bizarre uprising of 30 years ago.
When we all groped around levelling the sexual playing-field
while watching soft-porn movies like 'Last Tango in Paris' and
'Emmanuelle' and downright-porn like 'Deep Throat' and 'The
Devil in Miss Jones' after TIME and NEWSWEEK -- there wasn't
much else -- elevated them to instant classics.
When the best-known tourist attraction in New York City was a
"swingers-only-club" called Plato's Retreat.
And Penthouse magazine and the far-raunchier Hustler took enough
blue-chip advertisers away from the tame-by-comparison Playboy
to almost put Hugh Hefner out of business.
Stimulating this uninhibited public orgy -- long before the
onslaught of AIDS, Internet smut and the filth passing for
entertainment on today's cable TV -- the clever Alex erupted on
the scene with one of the biggest-selling books ever.
Called The Joy of Sex and initially issued as a
lavishly-illustrated hardback (forgive the expression), it went
on to be published in more versions and translated into more
languages than any other book since The Bible.
I never read it when it first came out -- "who needs a cook book
when you're eating well?" -- but on hearing of his death I
bought a copy and wondered just how far into his admirably long
life he enjoyed the sensual pleasures he once so lucratively
promoted.
Gently bestriding the subject with a pretty young friend last
week I wasn't too surprised when she asked why no-one ever talks
about sex for -- and by -- the over-60's.
Always willing to satisfy, and in a smallish way to take over
the torch so ably carried by Comfort I'm prepared to cast off
all inhibitions and accept the challenge.
And so dear reader -- whatever your age or sexual preference --
in the limited space remaining let me confirm categorically that
there is definitely sex after 60. If we're lucky.
That the thought of same remains omnipresent and uppermost in
all our minds.
That it is sought out and practised as often as possible and the
theory that our sex drive falls away after we fulfil our
"procreation" obligations is complete and absolute bunk.
Stay tuned for regular updates.
